I’m writing this as I look over the Caribbean Sea and take in the sun, sand and surf that is Cancun. Mexico!
Developed as a resort back in the 70’s, it wasn’t so long ago there was not much here other than the crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine beaches, a coconut plantation and a fishing village.
Nowadays it’s a vibrant holiday destination and the most populous city in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo.
With plenty of activities to keep you busy, you can explore ancient Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza, dive into the underwater museum of MUSA, or unwind in a luxurious spa-inspired by traditional Mayan wellness rituals.
Whether you want to zipline through the jungle, snorkel with whale sharks, or experience the local culture at a lively market, Cancun has something for everyone.
Here’s my guide to the best things to do in Cancun to help you plan your perfect getaway to this Caribbean paradise.
Best Things to Do in Cancun
1. Explore the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA)
This has been on my bucket list for years! And I wasn’t disappointed.
Cancun’s Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) is one of the most fascinating attractions in the region, featuring over 500 life-sized sculptures (including a VW Beetle) that have been carefully placed to foster coral growth and marine life.
You can explore this underwater wonderland through snorkeling, scuba diving, or even from a glass-bottom boat, making it accessible even to those who don’t want to venture into the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.
The museum was created not only as an artistic endeavor but also as a way to protect the natural reefs by diverting attention to the man-made installations. It’s an unforgettable experience that combines creativity, conservation, and adventure and I highly recommend adding to your bucket list!
2. Visit Chichen Itza, One of the New Seven Wonders of the World
Chichen Itza, an ancient Mayan city, is a must-see for anyone visiting Cancun. Located just a short drive from the city, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. (At the time of writing I haven’t been yet, but will most certainly update this post after my visit in the coming week!)
The most iconic structure here is El Castillo, a massive step pyramid that was once used as a temple to the god Kukulkan. But Chichen Itza offers much more than just one impressive building; the site is filled with ruins of temples, ball courts, and other remnants of the ancient civilization.
A visit to Chichen Itza offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Mayan people and is a testament to their architectural and astronomical achievements.
3. Relax on the White Sands of Playa Delfines
For those looking to soak up the sun, Playa Delfines is one of Cancun’s most beautiful beaches. Known for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters, this public beach is a favorite among both locals and tourists.
What sets Playa Delfines apart from other beaches in Cancun is its laid-back atmosphere. There are no high-rise hotels or beach clubs here, just open spaces and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.
The beach also features the famous “Cancun” sign, where visitors can snap a picture to remember their trip. Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, or simply enjoy the scenery, Playa Delfines is a perfect spot to unwind.
4. Dive into the Cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula
The Yucatan Peninsula is dotted with cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with fresh water that were sacred to the ancient Mayans. Cancun is the perfect starting point to explore some of these stunning natural formations. Cenotes offer a refreshing alternative to the beach, with their cool, clear waters and enchanting surroundings.
Some of the most popular cenotes near Cancun include Cenote Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote, and Cenote Ik Kil. Whether you choose to swim, snorkel, or dive, exploring the cenotes is an unforgettable experience that brings you closer to nature and the region’s ancient history.
5. Experience the Nightlife at Coco Bongo
No visit to Cancun would be complete without experiencing its vibrant nightlife, and Coco Bongo is the place to be. This iconic nightclub is known for its over-the-top shows that combine music, acrobatics, and special effects.
Unlike traditional nightclubs, Coco Bongo offers a unique entertainment experience that includes impersonators of famous artists, live bands, and a non-stop party atmosphere. The energy is contagious, and the performances are designed to keep the crowd dancing and cheering all night long. Whether you’re a party animal or just looking for a fun night out, Coco Bongo is a must-visit.
6. Explore the Mayan Ruins of Tulum
Tulum, located just a short drive from Cancun, is home to some of the most picturesque Mayan ruins in Mexico. Perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, the ruins of Tulum offer a breathtaking view that is hard to match. The site is much smaller than Chichen Itza, but it’s equally impressive with its well-preserved structures and stunning coastal backdrop.
Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya, and its strategic location served as an important trading hub. Today, it’s a popular day trip from Cancun, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
7. Take a Day Trip to Isla Mujeres
Just a short ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a small island that offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The island is known for its laid-back vibe, beautiful beaches, and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.
One of the highlights of a visit to Isla Mujeres is Playa Norte, a stunning beach with calm, shallow waters that are perfect for swimming. The island is also home to the Turtle Sanctuary, where visitors can learn about and interact with sea turtles. Renting a golf cart is a fun way to explore the island and discover its hidden gems.
8. Swim with Whale Sharks
Swimming with whale sharks is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one which I have attempted and failed at no less than 4 times! My daughter who jumped in 1 second before me got a beautiful face full of a whale shark, but by the time I looked down it had dived deep below the surface. I’ve also been scuba diving in Thailand on several occasions where I have again missed the whale shark.
However, you might be much luckier than I as many others on our boat were. These gentle giants migrate to the waters around Cancun from May to September, offering you the unique opportunity to swim alongside the largest fish in the ocean.
Despite their size, whale sharks are harmless and feed primarily on plankton. Tours are available that take you out to the open sea where you can snorkel with these incredible creatures. It was a bit choppy on the day we went and I recommend going in maybe July/Aug for a better chance of both seeing and swimming alongside these beautiful animals.
For me, 5th time lucky I hope!
9. Enjoy a Catamaran Cruise to Isla Contoy
Isla Contoy is a small, uninhabited island located just off the coast of Cancun, and it’s a true paradise for nature lovers. The island is a protected national park and a haven for birdwatchers, as it’s home to over 150 species of birds.
The best way to visit Isla Contoy is on a catamaran cruise, which often includes snorkeling stops at nearby reefs and a delicious lunch on the island. The waters around Isla Contoy are teeming with marine life, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and swimming. The island itself is pristine, with white sandy beaches and lush vegetation, offering a perfect escape from the crowds.
10. Visit Xcaret Park for an All-Inclusive Experience
Xcaret Park is one of the most popular attractions near Cancun, offering a unique combination of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and thrilling activities. The park is set in a lush jungle environment and features underground rivers, cenotes, and a beautiful beach.
Visitors can swim in the rivers, snorkel in the ocean, or simply relax on the beach. Xcaret also offers a variety of cultural shows and exhibitions, including a spectacular evening show that showcases Mexican music and dance.
The park is all-inclusive, meaning your ticket includes access to all the attractions, food, and drinks. It’s a perfect day out for families, couples, or anyone looking to experience the best of Mexico in one place.
11. Discover the Hidden Gem of Puerto Morelos
Just a short drive south of Cancun lies the charming fishing village of Puerto Morelos, a hidden gem that offers a more authentic and laid-back experience compared to the bustling city. This quaint town is known for its vibrant coral reefs, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving.
The town’s relaxed atmosphere and small-town charm provide a refreshing contrast to Cancun’s more tourist-heavy areas. Visitors can explore the local markets, enjoy fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants, or simply relax on the quiet beaches. Puerto Morelos also has a beautiful botanical garden, perfect for a stroll among native plants and wildlife.
12. Snorkel at Punta Nizuc
Punta Nizuc is one of Cancun’s best-kept secrets for snorkeling. Located at the southern tip of the Hotel Zone, Punta Nizuc is home to a section of the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The clear, shallow waters here are perfect for snorkeling, offering a chance to see a variety of marine life, including colorful fish, rays, and even sea turtles.
The area is also known for its underwater sculptures, which add an artistic touch to the underwater experience. Punta Nizuc provides an excellent snorkeling spot away from the more crowded areas, making it a great choice for those looking to explore Cancun’s underwater world.
13. Indulge in a Traditional Mexican Cooking Class
For a unique and interactive experience, consider taking a traditional Mexican cooking class in Cancun. These classes offer a hands-on way to learn about Mexican cuisine, from selecting fresh ingredients at a local market to preparing dishes like tacos, guacamole, and mole.
Guided by local chefs, participants not only learn cooking techniques but also gain insight into the cultural significance of the dishes. After the class, you’ll get to enjoy a delicious meal of your creation. It’s a fun and educational way to immerse yourself in Mexican culture, and you’ll leave with new skills and recipes to impress your friends back home.
14. Explore the Nichupte Lagoon by Kayak
The Nichupte Lagoon is a vast network of canals and mangroves that offer a different perspective of Cancun. Exploring the lagoon by kayak is a peaceful and scenic way to experience its natural beauty. The calm waters and lush surroundings make for a serene paddling experience, and there’s a good chance of spotting wildlife, including various bird species, iguanas, and even crocodiles.

The El Rey Ruins are also famous for the large number of iguanas that roam freely around the site, making it a fun and unique experience for visitors of all ages. It’s a great way to learn about the region’s history without venturing far from the main tourist area.

The tour typically includes a snorkeling stop at the Punta Nizuc coral reef, where you can explore the vibrant marine life. It’s an exciting way to experience both the natural beauty of Cancun’s inland waterways and the open sea. The combination of speed, adventure, and underwater exploration makes this a popular activity for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.
17. Experience a Temazcal Ceremony
A Temazcal ceremony is a traditional Mayan ritual that takes place in a small, dome-shaped sweat lodge. This ancient practice is believed to purify the body and mind, promoting healing and spiritual growth. In Cancun, several wellness centers and resorts offer Temazcal ceremonies guided by a shaman.
The experience involves sitting in the sweat lodge while hot stones are placed in the center and water infused with herbs is poured over them to create steam. The ceremony is accompanied by chanting, meditation, and sometimes music, providing a unique opportunity to connect with Mayan culture and spirituality. It’s a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience that many visitors find transformative.
18. Ride an ATV in the Jungle
Exploring the jungle terrain of Cancun on an ATV is a thrilling adventure that offers a different kind of fun. Several tour operators in the area provide guided ATV tours that take you through dense jungle paths, across muddy trails, and over rugged terrain.
It’s an exhilarating way to experience the natural beauty of the region while satisfying your need for speed.
