My personal definition of a lifestyle entrepreneur is someone who builds an online business or multiple businesses around their lifestyle.
In other words your lifestyle comes first, your business second.
As an example, my husband and I are lifestyle entrepreneurs. We travel full time and have created small and lean businesses that work around our nomadic lifestyle.
I’m not saying we don’t ever have to buckle down and get stuff done, but our goal has always been never to replace a job with essentially another job, working 24/7 to build a huge multi million dollar empire.
We need just enough to have the freedom to choose how we live and travel, and to make longer term investments which eventually turn into passive income.
We’ve been running online businesses and travelling for 14 years now, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this style of working and living! With no great plans to become the next Steve Jobs or create a silicon valley unicorn, we get to explore the globe, and balance our life between budget digital nomad backpack style travel and more luxury, slower, longer term stays in some beautiful destinations.
So I thought I’d put a post together with some ways that lifestyle entrepreneurs, particularly 50+ nomads can make money, and how to get started on your lifestyle entrepreneurship journey today.
Here are some of the top ways I recommend 50+ lifestyle entrepreneurs make money online today;
10 Ways to Make Money as a 50+ Lifestyle Entrepreneur
1. Freelancing
To get started quickly on your journey to become a lifestyle entrepreneur, I recommend freelancing. It’s undoubtedly the simplest and fastest route to generating an income from your laptop, and you have the freedom to work anywhere and at any time, so you can make the most of your talents and achieve your financial goals.
As a freelancer, you’re essentially selling your skills, and by our age we’ve built up a wealth of experience that lends itself perfectly to offering our services to other businesses/entrepreneurs.
You can start freelancing in a variety of ways, whether you specialize in a particular area, become a general virtual assistant or pick up a long term contract from a friend or old employer.
If you’re ready to take the plunge and become a freelancer, here are three tips to get you started:
- Figure out your niche. Effective freelancers know their strengths and specialize in a particular area. Try to develop a portfolio of projects that showcases your specialty and use it as a way to showcase your skills for potential clients.
- Register with Freelancing Sites. Use sites such as upwork.com, fiverr.com or freelancer.com to create a profile and start to bid for jobs. Research your niche for freelance jobs, as if you’re a writer, photographer, voice over artist etc, there are even specialized websites where you can find work.
- Learn to market yourself. Your success as a freelancer depends on your ability to promote yourself and your services. Create an eye-catching portfolio and use SEO and other marketing techniques to increase your exposure. Build a strong online presence through your website, social media and blog.
Finally, remember to always put your clients and their needs first. Stand by your work, exceed expectations and the rest will follow. With the right attitude, discipline and hard work, freelancing can be extremely fulfilling and a stepping stone to something bigger.
2. Start a Newsletter Subscription Business
Another excellent way to make money as a lifestyle entrepreneur is by creating a newsletter subscription business. With the rise of content marketing and the need for valuable information, starting a newsletter has become an attractive option for many entrepreneurs.
Here are the main steps to get started:
- Choose a niche: Select a niche that you’re passionate about and have expertise in. This could be anything from health and wellness to personal finance or travel.
- Start a social media account: Create a social media account on platforms where your target audience is most active. This will help you build a following and engage with potential subscribers.
- Create a lead magnet: Develop a free resource that provides value to your audience in exchange for their email address. This could be an e-book, checklist, or mini-course related to your niche.
- Create content promoting your lead magnet: Develop content that promotes your lead magnet and encourages people to subscribe to your newsletter.
- Use a newsletter platform: Consider using platforms like Beehiiv, Flodesk, or ConvertKit to manage your newsletter. These tools offer user-friendly interfaces, customizable templates, and automation features that make it easy to create and send professional-looking newsletters.
- Send regular newsletters: Once you’ve built a substantial email list, start sending regular newsletters packed with valuable content. Aim to provide a mix of informative articles, personal stories, and actionable tips that keep your subscribers engaged and coming back for more.
- Expand your offerings: As your audience grows, you can add paid subscriptions or products. For example, you could create a premium newsletter with exclusive content, offer one-on-one coaching sessions, or sell digital products like courses or templates.
Remember, the key to success with a newsletter subscription business is consistently providing value to your audience. By building trust and establishing yourself as an expert in your niche, you’ll be well on your way to creating a profitable and fulfilling lifestyle business.

3. Consultant/Coach
Consulting or coaching is an excellent way for lifestyle entrepreneurs to monetize their experience, expertise, knowledge, and skill set.
By positioning yourself as a sought-after expert in your chosen industry, you can build a thriving business that allows you to help others succeed while enjoying the freedom and flexibility of the entrepreneurial lifestyle.
The rewards of consulting and coaching extend beyond financial gain. You have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives, helping them grow and achieve their goals. In return, you gain respect, value, and a sense of fulfillment in your work.
As a consultant or coach, you have the power to set your own schedule and work on your business in a way that complements your lifestyle. You’re not tied to an office or expected to work long hours, giving you the freedom to balance your work and personal life in a way that suits you best.
To get started as a consultant or coach, consider the following steps:
- Identify your areas of expertise: Reflect on your skills, experiences, and knowledge to determine where you can provide the most value to your clients.
- Develop a unique offering: Think creatively about how you can package your services, whether it’s through one-on-one sessions, workshops, seminars, online courses, or in-person consultations.
- Define your target audience: Conduct thorough research on the demographics, interests, and needs of your ideal clients, and tailor your marketing efforts accordingly.
- Promote your services: Utilize various marketing channels, such as social media, email campaigns, content marketing, and word-of-mouth referrals, to attract potential clients and establish your brand.
- Set competitive pricing: Determine the right price for your services based on the value you provide, your target market’s willingness to pay, and your desired income goals.
- Deliver exceptional value: Consistently provide high-quality services that exceed your clients’ expectations, fostering long-term relationships and generating positive referrals.
Building a successful consulting or coaching business requires dedication, hard work, and a commitment to leveraging your expertise to become a leader in your industry. By focusing on delivering exceptional value to your clients and continuously refining your offering, you can create a profitable and fulfilling business that aligns with your desired lifestyle.
4. Selling Digital Products
My fourth suggestion to make money as a lifestyle entrepreneur, is to sell digital products.
Digital products are an excellent way for lifestyle entrepreneurs to generate income while maintaining flexibility and scalability. These products can be created once and sold indefinitely, making them a valuable asset for your business.
Digital products include items such as ebooks, audio files, videos, software, or even webinars.
Here are the steps to create and sell digital products successfully:
- Choose your niche/target market: Identify a specific audience that you want to serve with your digital products. Consider their needs, problems, and interests to ensure that your products will be valuable and relevant to them.
- Build an audience: Before launching your digital products, focus on growing your audience through various channels. Utilize social media platforms to engage with your target market, create valuable content to attract potential customers, and most importantly, build an email list to establish direct communication with your audience.
- Create a digital product that meets the needs of your audience: Listen to the questions, feedback, and concerns of your target market to develop a product that addresses their pain points. Consider starting with a minimum viable product (MVP) and iterating based on customer feedback to improve and expand your offerings.
- Promote your products: Once your digital product is ready, promote it through your email list, social media channels, and other marketing efforts. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and testimonials, as social proof can be a powerful tool in attracting new buyers. Incorporate your digital products into your lead generation funnel to maximize their visibility and sales potential.
- Diversify & Scale: As your business grows, consider diversifying your product lineup to cater to different segments of your audience or to address additional needs. Continuously improve and update your existing products based on customer feedback and market trends. Look for opportunities to scale your business by expanding your reach, partnering with other entrepreneurs, or exploring new marketing channels.
To ensure success in selling digital products, prioritize providing an excellent customer experience. Invest in yourself by learning the necessary skills for creating high-quality products, and utilize existing tools and platforms to streamline the creation and marketing processes.
By following these steps and consistently delivering value to your audience, you can build a thriving digital product business that supports your lifestyle entrepreneurship goals.
5. Start an Ecommerce Business
One of my favourite business models for lifestyle entrepreneurs is starting an ecommerce business.
With the right planning and execution, you can create a thriving online store that allows you to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of the entrepreneurial lifestyle.
The beauty of an ecommerce business is that you can start small and scale up as your business grows, without the burden of physical store locations and high overhead costs. There are several ways to approach starting an ecommerce business:
- Create an Etsy shop and integrate with a print-on-demand app to sell branded products
- Sell on a print-on-demand marketplace like Redbubble
- Dropship using Amazon or your own Shopify store.
- Create your own website and sell private label products
- Sell on Amazon using their FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) program
To get started:
- Choose a memorable store name and identify your target market.
- Select the business model that best suits your goals and create your storefront on your chosen platform.
- Source, manufacture, or create the products you want to sell.
- Set up customer service, shipping, and return policies.
- Optimize your store for search engines to increase visibility and attract potential customers.
- Prioritize creating a user-friendly customer experience to encourage repeat business and positive reviews.
- Invest in marketing and advertising tactics, such as Google and Facebook ads or influencer partnerships, to spread the word about your store.
- Utilize social media to grow your business and engage with your audience.
Building relationships and trust with your customers is key to generating more traffic and sales. If you’re building your own website, create a visually appealing design that makes navigation easy for customers. Provide excellent customer service by responding quickly to queries and addressing any concerns.
While launching an ecommerce store can be daunting, it’s a fantastic opportunity for you as a lifestyle entrepreneur to build a successful business that aligns with your values and desired way of life. With dedication, strategic planning, and a focus on customer satisfaction, you can create a thriving ecommerce business that supports your entrepreneurial journey.
6. Start an Amazon FBA Business
FBA stands for ‘fulfilled by Amazon’, which says what it does on the tin. As a seller, you store your products in Amazon’s fulfillment centers, and when a purchase is made, the order is ‘fulfilled’ by Amazon, ie., they ship your products, accept returns and deal with all the logistics.
You can read our 7 Figure Amazon FBA success story here.
Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) program is an excellent opportunity for lifestyle entrepreneurs to build a profitable e-commerce business. By leveraging Amazon’s extensive logistics network and customer base, you can streamline your operations and focus on growth.
Here are the steps to start a successful Amazon FBA business:
- Choose your niche/target market: Identify a specific audience and product category that you want to focus on. It’s important to note that competition in the e-commerce space is fierce, so I recommend building an audience and email list as early in your journey as possible. Having an established brand and engaged followers will greatly increase your chances of success when launching your FBA business.
- Pick your product(s) to sell: Research and select products that have high demand, are lightweight, and are not too expensive to ship. Look for items with minimal moving parts to reduce the risk of damage during shipping. Ensure that your chosen products have good profit margins to maximize your earnings.
- Find a supplier/manufacturer: Once you’ve identified your target products, find reliable suppliers or manufacturers who can produce them at a competitive price. Conduct thorough due diligence, including researching their reputation, production capabilities, and quality control measures.
- Brand and ship to Amazon warehouses: Develop a strong brand identity for your products, including packaging and labeling. Once your products are ready, ship them to Amazon’s fulfillment centers, where they will be stored and handled by Amazon’s staff.
- List & promote: Create compelling product listings on Amazon, optimized for search and conversions. Promote your products through various channels, such as your own audience (email list and social media followers), Amazon PPC (pay-per-click) advertising, influencer marketing, social media campaigns, and other advertising methods.
Selling through Amazon FBA offers several advantages, such as reduced shipping costs, access to analytical tools, and the ability to leverage Amazon’s storage and fulfillment capabilities. Additionally, Amazon handles customer service and returns, allowing you to focus on growing your business.
To succeed in your Amazon FBA venture, develop a comprehensive marketing strategy that includes understanding your competitors, optimizing pricing, and positioning your products effectively. Amazon’s built-in tools, such as search engine optimization and PPC advertising, can help drive traffic and sales to your listings.
By following these steps and continuously refining your approach based on market trends and customer feedback, you can build a thriving Amazon FBA business that supports your lifestyle entrepreneurship goals.
Remember that success in e-commerce requires dedication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn and grow along the way.
7. Become a Published Author
Self-publishing your book on platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and CreateSpace can be a fulfilling way to achieve a lifelong goal while potentially earning a significant income.
Whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction, here are some tips to help you get started as a self-published author on Amazon Kindle.
- Choose your book’s genre and concept: Decide whether you want to write a non-fiction book to inspire and motivate others or a fiction book to entertain your readers. Having a clear idea of your book’s purpose and target audience is essential.
- Plan and write your book: Create an outline and structure for your book. For non-fiction, include key points, stories, case studies, research, and formatted data. For fiction, develop a timeline, characters, plots, and overall story arc. Ensure that your writing style and opinion are clearly expressed, focusing on solving real-world problems or captivating your readers with vivid descriptions and engaging action. (AI can help with outlines/first drafts/plots etc)
- Edit your manuscript: Once you’ve completed your first draft, read through your entire manuscript three times. First, focus on structure and related issues, such as accidental repetition. Second, concentrate on copyediting and grammar, including punctuation and sentence structure. Finally, refine your work and seek feedback from trusted sources.
- Format and design your book: When you’re ready to publish, create an eye-catching cover and format your book according to Amazon KDP’s guidelines. They provide tutorials and guides to help you properly format your book for their platform.
- Protect your work: Look into digital copyright protection to prevent unauthorized copying and redistribution of your work.
- Publish and promote your book: Once your book is formatted and ready, publish it on Amazon KDP. Promote your book through various channels, such as social media, email marketing, and targeted advertising. Encourage readers to leave reviews, as they can greatly influence potential buyers.
- Continuously improve and expand your catalog: Analyze your book’s performance and gather reader feedback to identify areas for improvement. Consider writing additional books in the same genre or exploring new genres to expand your catalog and reach new audiences.
Becoming a self-published author on Amazon Kindle is a rewarding journey that requires time, effort, and dedication. By following these steps and continuously honing your craft, you can build a successful writing career and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that your work is being read by a wide audience.
8. Photographer/Videographer
If you have a passion for capturing stunning visuals and a creative eye, starting a photography or videography business can be a fulfilling way to make money as a lifestyle entrepreneur. With the right equipment, skills, and marketing strategy, you can turn your talent into a profitable venture.

Focusing on a specific niche can help you stand out in a competitive market and attract clients who are looking for your particular style and expertise.

Showcase your portfolio on your website and regularly update your social media accounts with your latest work, behind-the-scenes content, and engaging posts to attract potential clients.
- Offer online tutorials and educational content: Create step-by-step guides, tutorials, and educational content to share your knowledge and help others improve their photography and videography skills. This can help you build a following, establish your authority in your niche, and potentially generate income through affiliate marketing or advertising revenue.
- Sell stock photos and videos: Upload your best work to stock photography and videography sites like Shutterstock, iStock, or Getty Images. This can provide a passive income stream as people purchase licenses to use your content in their projects.
- Market your services and collaborate with others: Promote your photography or videography services through social media, email marketing, and networking with potential clients and industry professionals. Collaborate with other creatives, such as makeup artists, stylists, or models, to create compelling content and expand your reach.
To succeed as a photographer or videographer, consistently produce high-quality work, communicate effectively with your clients, and continually improve your skills. By dedicating time and effort to your craft and marketing your services strategically, you can build a thriving photography or videography business that supports your lifestyle entrepreneurship goals.
9. Online Tutoring
Online tutoring and teaching provide an excellent opportunity for lifestyle entrepreneurs to share their knowledge, help others, and earn an income while enjoying the freedom to work from anywhere in the world.
- Identify your area of expertise: Determine the subjects or skills you are most knowledgeable and passionate about, such as math, science, language, or creative pursuits. Consider your educational background, professional experience, and personal interests when choosing your teaching niche.
- Obtain necessary certifications or qualifications: Depending on your chosen subject and target audience, you may need to acquire specific certifications or qualifications to teach online. For example, teaching English as a second language may require a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification, which you can obtain through websites like Tefl.com.
- Register with online tutoring platforms or create your own profile: Join established online tutoring marketplaces like Chegg, TutorMe, or VIPKid, or create your own professional website and social media profiles to showcase your expertise and attract potential students.
- Set your rates and schedule: Determine your hourly rate based on your experience, qualifications, and the market demand for your subject. Establish a schedule that works for you and your students, taking into account time zone differences if you plan to work with international clients.
- Utilize video conferencing tools: Conduct your tutoring sessions using platforms like Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet to facilitate face-to-face interaction and screen sharing. This allows you to provide in-depth explanations, answer questions, and guide your students through the learning process.
- Create and sell online courses: In addition to one-on-one tutoring, consider developing and selling online courses on platforms like Udemy, Coursera, or Skillshare. This allows you to reach a wider audience and generate passive income from your educational content.
- Provide excellent customer service and support: Be prepared to handle various situations that may arise during your tutoring sessions, such as technical difficulties or student concerns. Maintain open communication with your students and their parents (if applicable), and strive to create a positive, supportive learning environment.
- Continuously improve and expand your offerings: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in online education. Seek feedback from your students and adapt your teaching methods to better meet their needs. Consider expanding your offerings by teaching new subjects or creating additional resources, such as worksheets or study guides.
By combining your expertise, passion for teaching, and entrepreneurial spirit, you can build a successful online tutoring or teaching business that allows you to make a positive impact on others while enjoying the benefits of a location-independent lifestyle.
10. Start a Blog/ Niche Site
Blogging remains a solid business model for lifestyle entrepreneurs, but it’s important to recognize that the landscape of search engine optimization (SEO) has undergone significant changes in recent months, particularly with Google’s preparations for the Search Generative Experience (SGE).
As a result, the key to success in blogging, as with most online business models, lies in building your own audience rather than relying solely on third-party platforms like search engines.
- Choose a niche and create valuable content: Select a topic that you are passionate about and have expertise in, such as personal finance, health and wellness, travel, parenting, or entrepreneurship. Create high-quality, authoritative content that provides readers with the answers and insights they need, establishing yourself as an expert in your chosen niche.
- Set up your blog or website: Choose a reliable hosting service and a user-friendly content management system (CMS) like WordPress. Install essential plugins to enhance your website’s functionality, security, and SEO. Ensure that your site is mobile-friendly and easy to navigate.
- Build your own audience: While creating search engine optimized content is important, focus on building your own audience through various channels. Leverage third-party platforms like social media, guest blogging, and online communities to drive traffic to your website and encourage visitors to join your email list. By owning your audience distribution, you can better control your blog’s growth and monetization potential.
- Grow your blog and attract traffic: Consistently produce high-quality content that resonates with your target audience. Promote your blog posts through your email list, social media profiles, and other relevant channels. Engage with your readers by responding to comments and growing a sense of community around your blog.
- Monetize your blog: Once you have built a substantial audience, explore various monetization strategies such as display advertising, affiliate marketing, sponsored content, digital or physical product sales, and offering services related to your niche. Diversify your income streams to create a more stable and resilient business model.
- Continuously improve and adapt: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in blogging, SEO, and online marketing. Analyze your blog’s performance using tools like Google Analytics and make data-driven decisions to optimize your content, user experience, and monetization strategies. Be prepared to adapt to changes in search algorithms and user behavior to maintain your blog’s success over time.
By focusing on building your own audience and creating valuable content, you can establish a successful blog or niche website that supports your lifestyle entrepreneurship goals.
Remember that blogging is a long-term game, and success often comes from consistent effort, experimentation, and a willingness to learn and grow along the way.
Any one of these lifestyle business ideas is a fantastic route to making money as a lifestyle entrepreneur without the processes of a traditional business plan, bank loans and everything else associated with setting up a brick and mortar business.
Other than Amazon FBA which would require some up front investment for stock, all these business models could be started with almost no money down, and with nothing but your laptop and a cup of coffee!
